Summary revision of rolls begins at Barpeta

BARPETA, Oct 16 � The summary revision of the electoral rolls for Barpeta district began on Wednesday with the base date as January 1, 2015.

The draft electoral rolls were released yesterday. Claims and objections will be accepted till November 10. The relevant part of the rolls will be read out in gram sabha or local body meets for the intimation of electors to find out if there is any error. October 17 and October 30 have been fixed for such meetings.

Addressing a meeting held at the conference room of the office of the Deputy Commissioner in the presence of representatives of political parties, Deputy Commissioner in-charge Rohini Kumar Choudhury and District Election Officer Hemanta Bhuyan gave details of the process of the summary revision.

They informed that the district administration has undertaken special measures to make the people aware of the process of the summary revision. Meetings with booth-level agents of the political parties to receive claims and objections will be held on October 19 and November 2. The last date for the disposal of claims and objections has been fixed as November 20 and the data base will be updated by December 20. The final electoral rolls will be published on January 5, 2015.

The Election Officer said that the Election Commission of India has made photos of electors mandatory and the name of the elector will be deleted if the photo is not submitted. He informed that the position of Barpeta district with regard to the enclosure of photos in the Elector�s Photo Identity Cards (EPICs) is satisfactory as it stands at 98.35 per cent compared to 93 per cent in the State. He added that the Election Commission would try its best to make EPICs error-free.
