SULFA man held for attack

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 26 Senior SULFA man Sailen Dutta Konwar was today arrested for allegedly resorting to indiscriminate firing in broad daylight near the residence of Mayur Talukdar, his one-time business partner and threatening the latters wife of dire consequences in what appears to be the fallout of business rivalry.

The incident took place around 2 pm on Karbi Path of Hatigarh area under Geetanagar Police Station when Konwar accompanied by two of his associates fired several rounds of bullets and forcibly entered the residential premises of Talukdar. However, no one was injured in the firing.

Talukdar was not present in his house when the incident occurred. Marks of gunshots were also spotted on vehicles parked inside Talukdars residential complex and the adjacent building. Family members and eye-witnesses have alleged that Konwar came with two other motorcycle borne youths and opened fire.

Police later rushed to the spot and recovered eleven empty shells of bullets from the spot.

Searches were conducted in all the probable locations to locate Konwar after the incident and finally he was arrested, Senior Superintendent of Police (City) Deepak Choudhury told mediapersons.

Choudhury also informed that preliminary investigation into the incident has indicated Konwars direct involvement in the firing though the motive behind the firing would be ascertained once the investigation is over.

We have received the First Information Report (FIR) and accordingly he has been booked under Sectins 307, 506 and 427 IPC read with Arms Act, Choudhury stated.

He also informed that the weapon has not been located as yet and the empty shells have been sent for examination to identify the type of weapon used.

The SSP also denied involvement of any of the pro-talk ULFA leaders in the incident. Speculations are rife about some pro-talk ULFA leaders showing keen interest in BG Yard leading to business rivalry between two groups.

One-time business partners, both Konwar and Talukdar have common interest in various business ventures and clash of interests in the coal dealings between the two, according to police, is presumed to be the reason behind the incident, though official confirmation is still awaited.

Rivalry between the two influential men, according to police, began to surface around a year back and it went to such an extent that Talukdar shelved his association with various joint ventures which involved Konwar.
