Sukhoi-30 crashes in Nagaon village, pilots safe

GUWAHATI, May 19 � A Sukhoi-30 aircraft of the Indian Air Force crashed in Nagaon district today. Though the pilots managed to eject safely, three civilians including two women received injuries when they were hit by parts of the crashed aircraft.

Official sources told The Assam Tribune that the Sukhoi-30 with two pilots took off at 12.17 pm from the Tezpur air base on a routine sortie. But due to unknown reasons, the aircraft lost all communication with the control tower around 12.36 pm and crashed at Baludor, Juria in Nagaon district around 12.40 pm.

Sources said both the pilots managed to eject before the crash and they were safe. However, the parts of the crashed aircraft hit three locals, severely injuring them. They were rushed to the Nagaon Civil Hospital for treatment.

The impact of the crash was such that it created a 25-foot deep crater in the area. The reasons for the crash were not yet known and the Defence Ministry has ordered a probe into the incident.

However, the Defence Ministry has not come out with details of the crash and even the names of the pilots were not released to the media. When contacted, the Defence Ministry Public Relations Officer said that the names of the pilots could not be revealed as it was �classified information.� A Sukhoi squadron was deployed in the North-east to improve India�s air defence preparedness in this part of the country.
