GORESWAR, Sept 4 � A mass agitation would be held in front of the Kamrup district (Metro) DC Office, Guwahati on September 6 under the aegis of the SUCI (communist), Guwahati Zila Committee to press the State government for construction of a permanent bridge over the Puthimari river on the Muktapur (Loch) - Rangiya (BLJC) PWD road for better surface communication in the vast north Kamrup district (R) and Rangiya subdivision area.
It may be noted that a wooden bridge was constructed by the PWD authorities in 1980 and it was washed away later by the flood water of Puthimari river in 1988. Since then there is no bridge (either wooden or RCC) over the river except a bamboo makeshift footbridge built by a few local youths resulting in the public having to pay Rs 5 to 20 to cross the river.
During the monsoons, the bamboo footbridge also disappears and there is no other way for communication. SUCI members Ajit Bhattacharyya and Sisir Kakoti in a press release stated that the agitators would raise their voices against the failure of the Tarun Gogoi government in bringing development in surface communication, RCC bridge construction, Rajiv Gandhi Rural Electrification Scheme, pure drinking water supply, PHC, veterinary services, agriculture etc particularly in the rural areas in Kamalpur LAC as well as in Rangiya LAC since the last 63 years.
