Students urged to build a vibrant new Assam

GUWAHATI, Sept 18 - State Assembly Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami on Sunday called upon the youth and students of the State to recapture the zeal and genius of the 19th-century academic and administrative stalwarts like Anundoram Borooah and Jagannath Baruah in order to build up a new vibrant, progressive and pulsating Assam which would outshine the rest of the country in merit and service to the country.

Goswami was addressing the congregation of former students of Jagannath Baruah Arya Vidyalay at Baligaon in Jorhat on Sunday.

The congregation was inaugurated by Ananta Kumar Baruah and presided over by Nipul Bora, chairman of the school management committee.

Goswami paid tributes in memory of Jagannath Baruah, the first graduate of Upper Assam, and litterateur Chandradhar Baruah, who had offered financial assistance for the school building.

Goswami also assured to offer Rs 4 lakh towards the improvement of the school building.

Environmentalist and Jadav Payeng planted a sapling to mark the occasion.

Earlier, Muni Badhav Baruah, retired banker and former student lit the ceremonial lamp.

The function was inaugurated by Mridul Baruah, a former student and presided over by Bhaben Puzari, retired president award- winning teacher.

Holiram Bora, Munindranath Goswami, Ajay Sarma, Anil Sarma, Deven Bora and Ajanta Bora recollected their association with the school and the lessons they had learnt from their beloved teachers.

Delivering a speech over the phone, senior journalist DN Chakravartty, also an alumnus, recollected his four years of schooling in his alma mater which was established in 1926. He said that the basic lessons he had learnt was from teachers like Murulidhar Baruah, Upendranath Neog, Kiron Chandra Goswami and Giridhar Sarma, who remained a guiding light for his entire life.
