Students stage dharna over Pengeree incident

TINSUKIA, April 23 - The Tinsukia district committee of the All Assam Tea Tribe Students� Association (AATTSA) staged a two-hour dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner�s office here on Friday and demanded Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the families of 11 people who died on April 11 at Penegree.

Further, a sum of Rs 5 lakh was demanded to provide succour to the son of Sumi Garh and Lakhimani Garh, who were killed by miscreants on the night of April 6. They also demanded immediate suspension of the Officer In-Charge of Pengeree Police Station, besides handing over investigation into the incident to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The students� body also demanded strict action against the Naga militants who were demanding money from the owners of Namdung Tea Estate of Margherita and to ensure the security of the people, including the workers of the tea estate. They submitted a memorandum in this regard to the Governor through the Deputy Commissioner.
