Students greeted with fruit saplings

MANGALDAI, July 4 - The Mangaldai branch of Assam Science Society and IQAC of Mangaldai College with the help of the Social Forestry wing here distributed about 200 saplings of local variety fruit trees to the students taking admission into the BSc first semester course in Mangaldai College for the academic session 2016-2017, the process of which was completed recently.

According to the Secretary of the local Assam Science Society Dr Kamala Kanta Borah, the distributed local variety fruit plant saplings included mango, black berry, amlakhi, olive and jackfruit, among others.

Regarding the idea of greeting the students with a sapling on the day of admission itself, Dr Borah reiterated, �We normally start any good work with plantation.� The students were thereafter presented one sapling each on the occasion.

Meanwhile, Professor Paresh Kumar Sarma, Coordinator of IQAC in his reaction said: �This unique initiative ought to create awareness among the students, guardians and citizens about the importance of plantation.�

He further pointed out that through such a programme, the college fraternity has tried to send home the message that only plantation alone can save life on earth. Teaching faculty members, namely Mukut Sarma, Dr Barnali Deka, Kunja Lata Barua, Mousumi Kangsha Banik, Dr Jayanta Barua, Dr Pranjit Sarma and Dr A Qasim and several other assistant professors of the college gave away the sapling to the newly-admitted students from the distribution table.

Earlier, in the welcome address, Principal Dr Khagendra Kumar Nath appealed to the students and guardians of the students coming for admission to collect one sapling each after acquiring admission into the BSc programme and also appealed to them not to dump the sapling on the way home, but on the contrary, to nurture it with care.
