Students demand steps to protect KNP rhinos

BOKAKHAT, May 17 - In protest against rampant killing of rhinos and the alleged involvement of forest personnel in poaching in the Kaziranga National Park, activists of the Chatra Mukti Sangram Samiti, Asom, which is the students� wing of KMSS on Monday took out a protest march to the KNP Director�s office shouting slogans.

On behalf of the Director of the Park, Subhasish Das, the DFO met the processionists at the gate and gave the students a patient hearing. The Golaghat district president of KMSS Ratan Dao, from the CMSS wing Mrinal Kumar Nath, Pradip Gogoi, Kesav Borah in their speeches strongly criticised the KNP authority for its complete failure in providing safety to the world-famous rhinos. The students� unit also lambasted the KNP authority saying that the killing of nine rhinos in the current year is a very shameful matter as the involvement of some field staff of the park has been proved.

Later, the Samiti handed over a memorandum to the DFO of the Park and addressed to the Director of KNP demanding a complete halt to the continuous killing of rhinos and other animals, to hang the poachers, to suspend the forest employees who were found involved in poaching, to take prompt measures for the protection of erosion in the park area, to appoint the unemployed youth living in the fringe villages of the park in the interest of better preservation of the valuable wildlife resources, to transfer immediately the unfit and inactive officers of the park, etc. They also sent a copy of the memorandum to the Union Minister of Forests & Environment, besides the DC of Golaghat. The DFO gave assurance of taking proper steps in this regard. The Revenue Officer of Bokakhat Circle, Bipul Das was also present on the occasion.
