By staff reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 8 The bodies of the two students who had gone missing after reportedly falling into the Brahmaputra near Chunsali under Noonmati Police Station on Sunday, could not be retrieved till last reports came in today.

Police said that search operation was on and was being extended to downstream areas of the Brahmaputra.

Meanwhile, the report to confirm consumption of alcohol by the five teenagers who had accompanied the deceased to the riverbank, is being awaited. On the reported allegation from the families of the deceased about a possible murder angle, police said that all aspects were being scrutinized although it was apparently a case of accident.

The two deceased, identified as Sahir Ahmed and Simanta Saurav Gayan both Class IX students of the Gurukul Grammar Senior Secondary School had gone to the riverside along with five of their classmates. A few of them were stated to be in an inebriated condition when the tragedy struck.

It may be recalled that there had been cases of drowning in the area in the past few years. Local residents are of the view that some sort of monitoring by the police is essential to prevent tragedies of similar nature in the future.
