Student killed in Imphal, curfew imposed

By Sobhapati Samom

IMPHAL, July 8 A Class XI student was killed in police action here today when police tried to control a protest march demanding implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in Manipur.

The student identified as Sapam Robinhood (16) succumbed to injuries, received during the police action, at a private hospital here, sources said. There are reports of 20 students including girls being injured during the agitation. They were sent to hospital for medical aid.

Meanwhile, the district administrations of Imphal East and West districts have imposed indefinite curfew in the greater Imphal area to prevent any untoward incident.

The State has been witnessing a series of agitations since the past few days under the aegis of Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) for the implementation of ILPS to regulate the influx of outsiders whose demographic influence has been threatening the existence of the indigenous people.

Terming the Manipur Regulation of Visitors, Tenants & Migrant Workers Bill, 2015 which was passed in the last Assembly session as inadequate and meaningless, JCILPS demanded that the Bill be withdrawn in the current Assembly session. They further demanded the introduction of a fresh bill to fulfil the aspirations of the indigenous people.

ILPS, an official travel document to allow inward travel of Indian citizens into restricted areas for a limited period, is in force in the States of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Mizoram in the NE. Some organisations are demanding introduction of the ILPS in Meghalaya too.
