GUWAHATI, July 8 - A delegation of the All Assam Students Union and the All Gorkha Students Union today had a discussion with State coordinator of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) updating process Prateek Hajela over the apprehensions of the Gorkha community concerning its status as original inhabitant (OI).

Government officials at some places in the State had given it in writing that the Gorkha community was not original inhabitants of Assam, triggering fear and confusion among the community.

The AASU said in a statement that the NRC coordinator assured the delegation that members of the Gorkha community living in the State for ages did not have to fear about their names not getting enrolled in the NRC. The NRC coordinator said that some officials had wrongly termed members of the community as not original inhabitants.
