Student bodies call indefinite Manipur bandh from today

By CORRESPONDENT

IMPHAL, July 5 - A string of student organisations which include the Thadou Students Association, Rongmei Naga Students Organisation, North East India and Liangmei Naga Katimai Ruangdi have called an indefinite Statewide bandh from 6 am tomorrow over the alleged failure of the State Government to recruit tribal language (MIL) teachers in higher secondary schools of Manipur.

On June 26, these student bodies had served an ultimatum to both the Chief Minister and the Education Minister, demanding immediate action by issuing a notification for recruitment of MIL teachers on or before June 30. But the authorities have turned a deaf ear to the demand, the student bodies alleged.

However, the Kuki Students Organisation (KSO), Imphal branch, has opposed the indefinite Statewide bandh as it challenges the authority of the apex tribal students organisation All Tribal Students Union, Manipur (ATSUM), according to a press release. The Senapati District Students Association and the Zeliangrong Students Union, Manipur have also opposed the bandh.
