Strike hits Manipur for second consecutive day

IMPHAL, July 19 - Manipur University Students� Union (MUSU) sponsored 48 hour general strike demanding removal of the university Vice Chancellor Prof Adya Prasad Pandey for his alleged financial and administrative irregularities, affected the normal life in the State for the second consecutive day on Thursday.

However, there is no report of any untoward incidents during the general strike which began on July 17 midnight.

Markets, banks, business establishments and educational institutions remained closed and transport services were suspended for the second day.

The roads here wore a desolate look since dawn to dusk as transport services were suspended for the second day. Attendance in government offices and other private establishments was almost nil since Wednesday.

The strike supporters came out in groups and enforced the strike at many places despite deployment of security force personnel at strategic locations.

MUSU launched the agitation against the VC on May 30 demanding his removal immediately. The students� body along with Manipur University Teachers� Association and Manipur University Staff Association in a joint meeting on Wednesday resolved not to provide any cooperation to the new Fact Finding Committee reconstituted by Union HRD Ministry to look into the allegations against the VC.
