Stress on quality for competitive edge in manufacturing

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 27 - The 4th Regional Quality Conclave (RQC) was organised here on Tuesday by the Quality Council of India and industry body FICCI.

The theme of the conclave was Quality for manufacturing competitiveness.

Ravi Capoor, Additional Chief Secretary (Industries & Commerce), inaugurated the one-day conclave.

In his speech, Capoor said that in order to maintain economic growth there is a need to focus on quality in the process of manufacturing.

We should not only check the quality after a product is manufactured, but we should also ensure quality while the process of manufacturing is going on. For instance, if we can ensure that the tea produced in Assam is of the best quality, then it will bring a huge economic change. The need of the hour is to build a good ecosystem of quality control. We need to train the new entrepreneurs and imbibe a sense of quality among them, he said.

Shyam Bang, Chairman of National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies (NABCB), said that there should be a push from all sides to grow the manufacturing sector in India.

The contribution of manufacturing to our countrys GDP is huge. One of the major factors for manufacturing growth is quality control. We have to strive hard to improve the quality system in our country, he said.

CK Biswas, CEO of National Board for Quality Promotion (NBQP), was also present in the occasion.

The conclave had sessions on topics like Zero Defect Zero Effect, new technologies for smart and sustainable manufacturing, besides a panel discussion on policy measures for enhancing quality and competitiveness.
