Stress on protecting environment

GUWAHATI, June 7 � The Botanical Hobby Centre, Department of Botany, Cotton College celebrated World Environment Day on June 5 in collaboration with Assam Science Technology and Environment Council.

A quiz competition was held among, school children in which TC Girls� HS School bagged the 1st and 2nd prizes. The 3rd prize was won by Cotton Collegiate HS School. The quiz was conducted by Dr Mandira Sarma, a release said.

Dr Firoz Ahmed, from Aranyak made a very lively interaction with the children and made them aware of the necessity of protecting the environment.

Trees for Life: World Environment Day was observed by the NGO Trees for Life, Guwahati. An environment awareness campaign and a tree plantation ceremony were conducted by the NGO on the premises of Blind School, Latakata, Basistha, where all students, teachers and members of the NGO participated, according to a press release.

AD Lahkar, president of the NGO presided over the meeting. Dr Chandra Barua, retired professor of Botany from Gauhati University was the main speaker. He exhorted the students and other members present to uphold the essence of the theme of the World Environment Day, 2010. �Many Species � One Planet� one Future� in everyday life.

Awareness campaign: An awareness campaign on Environment Day was organised by the students of Blooming Bud�s School, Dispur, according to a press release.

The students, holding banners and placards took out a procession from the school premises at Rukminigaon. A drawing competition was held on the occasion.
