GUWAHATI, Feb 20 - The 31st anniversary celebrations of city-based Down Town Hospital concluded recently with the 28th Down Town Public Oration & Award function here, said a delayed press release.
The oration was delivered by Dr P Balachandran Menon, director of liver transplant surgery of Yashoda Hospital, Hyderabad. He spoke about the causes of liver diseases and on preventive measures by adopting positive lifestyle changes.
Dr Menon discussed both living and cadaveric transplant and highlighted the advantages of cadaveric transplantation. According to him, as awareness is still lacking in this part of the country, more awareness programmes and public education will be beneficial in saving more lives.
Mayurakshi Dutta, executive director of Down Town Hospital, welcomed the guests.
Eminent litterateur and former president of Asam Sahitya Sabha Dr Lakshmi Nandan Bora inaugurated the oration. He lauded the hospital authorities for their initiative in organising the public oration on liver transplantation, adding that this is the need of the hour for the people of the North East.
The award for Excellence in Medicine 2020 was conferred on Prof Atindra Kumar Adhikari, former principal of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) during the event. The award carries a citation, a gold medal, a memento and a cheque of Rs 1 lakh.
Further, two awards instituted in memory of Prof Jogesh Mahanta and Prof Pratul Goswami for their immense contribution in the development of the hospital, were given to distinguished doctors who have worked in the healthcare sector.
The Prof Jogesh Mahanta Memorial Award was given to Dr Bhaskar Borkotoky, senior consultant (plastic and re-constructive surgery) of Down Town Hospital, while the Prof Pratul Goswami Memorial Award was given to Dr Malavika Barman, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry, GMCH.
