Strength in unity, May Day meet reminds workers

GUWAHATI, May 2 � Along with other parts of the country, May Day was also observed at various places in the State. Our Correspondents report.

JAGIROAD: May Day was observed at the Nagaon Paper Mill (NPM), Jagiroad by the Kagaj Nigam Karmi Union (KNKU) of NPM, with various programmes.

A tree plantation programme was also organised on the occasion which was inaugurated by Paban Kumar Bhuya, ED, NPM Jagiroad along with the in-charge FDP, Ujjal Moni Phukan and Prabir Kumar Mukherjee, Manager (Civil).

A public meeting was held under the chairmanship of the president of the KNKU, Dhiren Bora in which several senior workers of the mill, namely Ashok Kumar Roy, Ananda Bordoloi and Krishna Lal Sharma spoke. Earlier, Pitambor Deka, general secretary of the union explained the significance of May Day. Three retired workers of the mill, namely, Prafulla Ch Nath, Sambhu Kalita and Irfan Ali were felicitated in the meeting.

Senior worker of the mill, Dipen Ch Das hoisted the flag which was followed by smriti tarpan offered by Ananda Bordoloi, former general secretary, KNKU, NPM, Jagiroad.

MANGALDAI: Along with the rest of the State, World Labour Day was observed here with a day-long programme under the aegis of the All Mangaldai Construction Workers� Union (Sadou Mangaldai Nirman Shramik Santha).

An open session was held in the afternoon at Vidyapith High School playground which was attended by hundreds of people from the worker community, local leading citizens and common public, among others. Speaking on the occasion as an appointed speaker, eminent writer and educationist Idris Ali appealed to the workers� community to remain united and thwart any evil design of the capitalist class to create division within themselves so that they can ensure their right and legitimate demands.

The session which was chaired by Saiyadur Rahman of the workers� union was also addressed among others by retired professor of Mangaldai College, Rajendra Barooa, retired principal of Mangaldai College Bichitra Kr Medhi, prominent industrialist and secretary of Mangaldai Chambers of Commerce, Mukul Deka, former official of Indian Air Force, Rajani Kanta Nath, journalists Mayukh Goswami and Bikas Ali, among others, who highlighted the significance of the 129-year-old Labour Day and offered their wishes to all working people of the world.

Earlier, Atul Kalita, secretary of the Nirman Shramik Union explained the objectives of the meeting. In the meeting, six seniormost skilled workers of the locality were felicitated with gamosa, citation letter, umbrella, cash etc., in recognition of their contribution towards the field of construction. The day-long celebration which ended with a cultural evening also featured hoisting of the organisational flag, besides flag of the World Labour Day, plantation, smriti tarpan, sports competition and a cultural rally.

GOLAKGANJ: May Day was observed in different places of Dhubri subdivision. The day was observed at the Children�s Park, Dhubri under the aegis of the AIUTC, UTUC and CITU on Friday with a day-long programme.

In this connection, the red flag was unfurled by the former Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, Giasuddin Ahmed, followed by paying of floral tributes on the martyr�s column. A meeting was held in which veteran trade union leader Tripad Chakrabarty explained the significance of May Day.

TINSUKIA: The Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS), Panitola branch with the cooperation of AAL, an NGO and the people of Nalani-Khamtigoali Tea Estate observed May Day at Nalani Tea Estate.

The programme began with the hoisting of flag by Topeswer Nayak, president, Panitola branch of ACMS and the smriti tarpan programme was initiated by Raju Sahu, Parliamentary Secretary, Dept of Labour and Employment, Govt of Assam and secretary, ACMS, Panitola branch.

The other programme included competitions of tug- of-war, musical chair, art and quiz competition etc., among the children. Competition on Jhumur dance was also organised. In the open session, Lokeswer Kurmi, chief organiser, ACMS, central committee addressed the gathering. A cultural evening was also arranged as a part of the programme.

Meanwhile, several organisations affiliated to the All India Central Council of Trade Union (AICCTU) also jointly observed the day at Tinsukia. At the premises of CPI (ML) office here, the flag was hoisted by Subhash Sen, secretary, State council, AICCTU.

Doomdooma: The Doomdooma branch of the Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS) observed May Day at Doomdooma Town Field on Friday. In the morning, Dileswar Tanti, the president of Doomdooma branch ACMS hoisted the flag while the secretary Rupesh Gowala initiated the smriti tarpan. A procession was brought out with the labourers of various tea gardens of Doomdooma circle which was inaugurated by Tinsukia DC, Puru Gupta.

Later, an open meeting was held under the presidentship of Dileswar Tanti which was addressed by the ACMS president and former Union Minister Paban Singh Ghatowar and former Minister of State Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma.
