Streetlights demanded in Tura

By Correspondent

TURA, Oct 30 - Residents of Tura have demanded streetlights in the town for their safety and security.

As most localities in the town lack streetlights, the entire open space is enveloped in darkness as dusk sets in. Residents complain that the darkness allows alcoholics and drug addicts to indulge in illegal activities without the fear of getting caught.

Though streetlights existed in the town earlier, these have now vanished. A memorandum in this regard has also been submitted to West Garo Hills DC Ram Singh.

The streetlights which still stand are non-functional, while others have been dismantled. The installed solar lights are also non-functional, due to which the entire bazaar area plunges into darkness in the evening hours. People of some localities have installed streetlights by using their own resources.

Tura is the most important town of Garo Hills. However, the lack of a streetlighting system is a major drawback. We urge the Government to work out some remedial measures and ensure the safety of people in the nighttime, said a local resident, B Saha.
