Storm render many families homeless in Sonitpur, Dhemaji

TEZPUR, April 24 - Many families at Bandarmari-Khelmati under Bandarmari area gaon panchayat in Sonitpur district were rendered homeless after a severe storm lashed the area yesterday evening.

Dwelling houses of five poor families of the area and seven other families in the Khamukia area were destroyed in the storm.

The affected families have urged the government to extend its help.

On the other hand, in the Batomari area near here, dwellings of seven poor families were severely damaged due to the last evening�s storm. In the incident, one minor also received injuries.

Our correspondent from Dhemaji adds: On Wednesday night, a cyclonic storm lashed several areas of Dhemaji and Sissiborgaon circles in Dhemaji district, leaving a trail of devastation.

The storm damaged 98 dwelling houses in the Pachim Dhemaji and Sissiborgaon areas.

Around 500 families in 13 villages have been affected by the storm.

The cyclone also uprooted trees, bamboo grooves and electric poles in these areas.
