Storm lashes Nagaland

DIMAPUR, May 14 - A massive cyclonic storm lashed many parts of Nagaland on Monday evening, leaving a trail of destruction.

An official release on Tuesday said two persons suffered injuries due to the storm in Kiphire and were immediately taken to the Kiphire district hospital. Several houses were damaged by the storm which was accompanied by heavy rainfall.

The release said Kiphire district was one of the worst affected districts in the cyclonic storm.

Rooftops of many houses in the district were blown away, while the Kiphire District Public Relations Officer�s building was partially damaged by the storm. The power supply was also cut off in the district, the release said.

It said people of Kiphire district are expecting the power supply to be restored soon.

Rain and strong winds also lashed Dimapur on Monday evening, uprooting trees, damaging houses and knocking down electric polls.

Strong winds blew dust along the under-construction National Highway-29 from Purana Bazar to Chumukedima, affecting visibility and causing inconvenience to the commuters in the town. There were, however, no reports of any casualty.

The windstorm blew away tin roofs, while some trees reported fell down on houses in some areas of the town. Power supply was disrupted in many parts of the town. However, it was restored on Tuesday morning. There were reports of hailstorm and strong winds in other districts, including Kohima.
