Storm destroys 800 shops, houses in Karimganj

BADARPUR, April 22 � At least 800 shops and houses were completely destroyed at Karimganj and its adjoining areas by a severe cyclonic storm which occurred in the early morning on Monday.

Under Karimganj Municipality, each and every ward has been badly affected, where a large number of trees, electric posts, telephone lines, etc, have been completely destroyed. Many tin roof houses, walls and fences etc, have been damaged.

The roofs of Karimganj SP office, 1 No. platform of Karimganj railway station, Karimganj Public High School and Bipin Chandra Paul School have been badly damaged by the cyclonic storm. Karimganj municipality sources said it will take at least three days to fully normalise electricity, telephone and drinking water services.

Government sources said at least two thousand people were badly affected in this cyclonic storm, which caused losses of property worth Rs 3 crore.

Giving information to this correspondent, ASEB sources said at atleast in 500 areas electric wire and posts haven been destroyed and construction or repair works are going on in full swing.

Karimganj MLA Mission Ranjan Das has already discussed with Rehabilitation Minister Bhumidhar Barman and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, regarding this natural calamity, for immediate relief and rehabilitation.
