AIZAWL, Sept 3 - Alleging that construction of a mosque and a school continue unabated at Zophai on the disputed land between Assam and Mizoram, the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (Mizoram�s apex student body) today vowed that it would soon renew construction of a resting shed, �Zofate Chawlhbuk�, on the land over which both States claim ownership.
The MZP, in its executive meeting today, expressed displeasure over the �unabated construction of a mosque� at Zophai where the it had been prevented from constructing a shed. The student body demanded the Mizoram Government to stop the construction of mosque and school at Zophai and also asked the State-level core committee (on border dispute) to take up the matter.
�If the construction of the mosque and school is not stopped, the MZP will renew the construction of the Zofate Chawlhbuk there,� the MZP warned the Government.
During a district-level meeting between officials of Mizoram and Assam on August 27, both sides agreed to maintain status quo on the disputed land along the inter-State border.
The meeting at Bairabi in Mizoram was held following complaint against construction of a mosque at Zophai, allegedly by some residents of Assam.
Last year, the Centre had asked both Mizoram and Assam governments to maintain status quo on the disputed land following tension. A meeting of the Mizoram Government�s core committee on the border issue was held on August 8 last under the chairmanship of Mizoram Chief Secretary Lalnunmawia Chuaungo. The meeting instructed the Mizoram Home Department to take adequate measures for demolition of structures illegally being constructed by residents of Assam.
