Steps to thwart NSCN activities in NC Hills

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 12 The State Government has taken serious note of the violent activities, including extortion, by the NSCN (IM) and NSCN (K) in NC Hills district, and initiated tough measures to curb the anti-social acts of these militant outfits.

This was revealed by Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain in the Assembly today when the attention of the Government was drawn to a recent news item n the matter in a vernacular daily by Dr Kamala Kalita (AGP).

Hussain said that four cases of extortion demands by the outfits had been registered since 2009 till March 11, 2010 but despite repeated appeals by the police, the victims of extortion rarely cooperated with the law-enforcing agencies. Many such instances do not come to light as the aggrieved parties try to settle the matter with the militants without informing the police, he said.

Hussain said that as a result of stepped-up operation against ultras in the district, police and security forces had arrested (since 2009) 158 cadres of militant outfits (including 20 NSCN members), seized 63 different weapons (including 18 belonging to the NSCN), and seized 26 bombs/grenades (including ten belonging to the NSCN) besides neutralizing six NSCN cadres.

The Minister said that while the overall situation in the district improved a lot following the surrender of the DHD (J) militants, the NSCN groups were still indulging in sporadic incidents of extortion in some very remote cases.
