GUWAHATI, April 25 - Water Resources Minister Keshab Mahanta today said efforts are being made for sharing hydrological data with bordering countries, including China to ensure minimum flood-induced damage this monsoon.
Speaking at a press conference here, Mahanta said the State Government is in touch with bordering countries, states and agencies for regular sharing of hydrological data.
�The State Government had raised the issue of Brahmaputra river water turning turbid with the Central Government and China�s failure to share hydrological data with us last year. After pursuance by the Central Government, China has agreed to resume sharing hydrological data once again,� he claimed.
Citing a Central Water Commission (CWC) report, he said there are minor blockades at the upper reaches of the Brahmaputra, but �it will not cause any damage.�
The Bhutan Prime Minister, who had visited the State a couple of months back, had also assured all cooperation in sharing data regularly.
A director level meeting has been organized with NEEPCO on May 4 next during which data sharing on water released from NEEPCO dams in the region that impact Assam will be discussed, the minister added.
Mahanta also claimed that all breached embankments under his department have been repaired, but a few under other departments are still to be plugged.
�All 26 embankments that were breached in last year�s floods have been repaired, except the one at Lawkhowa where work is going on and will be completed by deadline of April 30 next,� he said.
