By Sobhapati Samom

IMPHAL, Dec 31 - Steps are on to include Imphal among the clean 75 major cities and State capitals of the country. As part of the excercise a survey will be held to review the sanitation and hygiene situation in the city here.

Disclosing this to media persons during a press conference at Old Secretariat conference hall here on Thursday, Secretary Manipur Housing and Urban Development (MAHUD) RK Dinesh appealed to the general public to support the upcoming collection of data through an interactive voice response system (IVRS). The programme would be taken up as a Swachh Bharat city ranking under the Union Ministry of Urban Development.

Swachh Bharat Mission is aimed at ensuring door to door garbage collection and proper disposal of municipal solid waste in all the 83,000 wards in urban areas by 2019.

Seeking cooperation from the public, Dinesh said the survey will be started from January 5 and will be completed by January 20 in the country. For Manipur, the survey will be started from January 12 and will be completed on January 14, MAHUD Director N Gitkumar said. The result will be announced on January 25 next year.

The survey which would confirm work done on the construction of household individual toilets and community toilet, door to door collection of garbage and waste management, is aimed at fostering a spirit of competition among the cities and to ensure cleanliness in urban areas, Gitkumar said.

In the last survey for ranking 476 cities in the country with a population of above one lakh each, Imphal was ranked at 83rd place while ranking of other NE cities were: Gangtok-10, Agartala-32, Aizawl-35, Guwahati-51 and Shillong 120, Gitkumar informed.

Currently Imphal has six places where few NGOs have been engaged for daily door to door garbage collection. With such initiatives, Imphal has improved a lot in regard to door to door garbage collection, he said.
