GUWAHATI, Aug 8 - The Assam Government has undertaken the necessary steps for exhibition of the Brindabani Bastra, the rare drape reflecting some aspects of the Vaishnavite traditions, in the State.
Minister of Cultural Affairs Naba Kumar Doley while replying to a question by AGP MLA Brindaban Goswami in the Legislative Assembly on Monday said that the British Museum has a provision of lending its treasures for exhibition if its terms and conditions are met and that the State Government has initiated the process in this direction.
This unique piece of cloth that highlights the skill of Assamese weavers was woven in the 16th century under the supervision of the great Vaishnavite saint and social reformer Srimanta Sankardeva and his chief disciple Madhavdeva. It is in possession of the British Museum now. It depicts scenes from Lord Krishnas childhood home of Brindaban.
Doley said that a request for holding a four-month exhibition of the Bastra in the State would be sent to the authorities of the British Museum and all help from the authorities concerned would be sought in this connection. He also said that two places in the Assam State Museum have been considered for holding the exhibition.
