Steps to ensure Assamese in Unicode

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Sept 6 - Cultural Affairs Minister Naba Kumar Doley today told the Assembly that the State government was taking every possible step to ensure that the Assamese script was accorded its legitimate independent space in Unicode.

Replying to a call attention by AGP legislator Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, who referred to a news item Problems in securing ISO code for Assamese script remain in The Assam Tribune dated September 3, 2017, Doley said the State government had vociferously been placing the demand before the Union Ministry of Information Technology and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for a long time.

Doley said that following pressure from the State government and a series of meetings with the Union ministries and departments concerned, the latest meeting held on August 23 this year resolved that the proposal of the State government would be submitted to Unicode by BIS for securing a separate identity for the Assamese script that has still been using the Bangla script in Unicode.
