SILCHAR, Aug 7 - The Khasi Students� Union, Barak Valley chapter has assured the people of the valley that there would be no more harassment in the name of showing their NRC documents meted out to the people travelling to and from Barak Valley to Shillong or Guwahati.
On the sidelines of a meeting organised by the North East Linguistic and Ethnic Coordination Committee (NELECC), Morningstar Suja, president of the Khasi Students� Union of Barak Valley on Monday said �there are 17 ethnic tribes in Barak Valley and we understand the plight of the people travelling to and from places of Barak Valley to Guwahati or Shillong unlike what happened after the complete draft of the NRC got published on July 30. We went and spoke to the general secretary of the Khasi Students� Union at Meghalaya and they have assured there would be no further problems. Meghalaya Police is looking into the developments.�
Members from the All Dimasa Students� Union also shared similar views and extended cooperation.
On the other hand, Dhrubhendu Shekhar Bhattacharjee, advocate at the Supreme Court, who also attended the meeting said that people of the State must not pay heed to the rumours spread by a vicious circle to spread chaos and panic among the people. �The number of left-outs in the complete draft of the NRC is not exactly what it is made to be understood. In a Writ Petition on the issue of NRC, the Supreme Court of India had said that as per the report of the NRC State Coordinator a total of 2,89,83,677 people have been included in the complete draft of the NRC whereas 40,70,707 names have been left as ineligible for inclusion. Out of the 40, 70,707 names, 37, 59,630 names have been rejected and 2, 48,077 names have been kept on hold in the complete draft.� He added to say that North East Linguistic and Ethnic Coordination Committee will extend all support to the people who have been left out so that they can duly file claims and objections when the process gets under way.
Further, the committee made it clear that soon they will meet the Assam Governor and Chief Minister with demands to stop sending people to the detention camps and appraise them to implement the provisions of the notification issued by the Central Government on September 7, 2015 giving a much-needed safeguard to the people who came from Bangladesh due to religious persecution.
