Steps sought to stop crimes against women

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 5 - The Assam State unit of the All India Professionals Congress (AIPC) today asserted that in every half an hour one woman faces oppression in the State. The AIPC State unit has demanded urgent steps to check all such incidents of crime against women in the State.

In a statement here, it said during the past two years, around 30,000 cases of crime against women were registered with the States police stations. These cases include 17,500 cases of physical attack, 3,009 cases of rape, 9,208 cases of abduction and 186 dowry-related cases. Even the minor girls are also not spared by the criminals perpetrating such crimes, it said.

People from various parts of the State have been demanding stringent measures to punish the criminals involved in these cases. But the State Government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has proved itself to be a total failure in checking such crimes against the womenfolk.

These incidents of crime against women have caused a lot of worry for the people of the State and in other parts of the country they are facing immense embarrassment because of such cases, said the AIPC State unit.

Moreover, the violent incidents of loot, dacoity and murder have become the order of the day under the present regime in the State, said the AIPC State unit.
