Steps for smooth conduct of polls in Guwahati

GUWAHATI, March 7 � To enhance transparency and prevent wrong-doings during the world�s largest democratic exercise, 24 polling stations in the city will have provision for live telecast of the entire voting process during the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.

District Electoral Officer Ashutosh Agnihotri told the media here today that the 24 polling stations selected for this process would be even across the four Assembly constituencies in the city � Jalukbari, Dispur, Guwahati East and Guwahati West � which form the part of the Guwahati Lok Sabha seat.

Web casting in this way would be carried out for the first time here.

Agnihotri said there would be a total of 1,108 polling booths at 472 polling stations located in the city. Polling for the Guwahati Lok Sabha seat is scheduled for April 24.

There are a total of 9,69,050 voters in the city, including 4,97,200 male voters, 4,71,803 female voters and 47 �Others.� The city has 5,059 D-Voters.

There are a total of 7,207 new electors in the age group of 18-19 years in the city, including 3,950 males and 3,257 females.

Altogether, 3,823 polling personnel would be on duty in the city.

�For better management of the polling process, we will divide the city into 17 zones and 94 sectors. We have formed a cell for enforcement of the model code of conduct and the first level checking of EVMs has been done,� Agnihotri said.

He added that for the benefit of people who have not yet registered their names in the electoral roll, a special drive would be carried out next Sunday (March 9) between 9 am and 5 pm at all the polling booths where citizens can get themselves registered.

Speaking on the occasion, City SSP AP Tiwari said steps for free and fair polling, including seizure of all licensed and illegal weapons and illicit drugs have been started and the police will carry out �Vulnerability Mapping� of the entire city.

He said each polling station will have one constable and one home guard personnel and armed forces will be deployed at the vulnerable polling stations and for patrolling. The date of issue of notification for the election to the Guwahati Lok Sabha seat will be on March 29. The last date for filing of nominations will be April 5, scrutiny of nominations will be done on April 7 and last date for withdrawal of candidature is April 9.
