Statue of Lachit Barphukan unveiled at Jamugurihat

JAMUGURIHAT, Aug 22 - A statue of great Assamese general, the first of its kind in any government office premises in Assam, was unveiled in front of the head office of 12th Assam Police Battalion, Kusumtola, Jamugurihat on the side of National Highway no. 52 recently.

This 13-foot-high statue constructed at the sole initiative of the commandant of the battalion, Kumar Sanjit Krishna (APS) at a cost of more than Rs 1 lakh donated by personnel of the battalion. The huge and beautiful statue was made by a sculptor jawan Rajani Nath with the help of other jawans.

Unveiling the statue in front of a huge gathering, the commandant hoped that the great general Lachit Barphukan, who had defeated the mighty Mughal Army in the famous battle of Saraighat, will imbibe the spirit of valour and patriotism among the personnel of the battalion, students of various educational institutions and the members of the public who pass through the road. Retired professor Golap Kalita, principal in-charge, THB College, Jamugurihat, Sahabuddin Ahmed also spoke few words about the great general.
