Statue of first Nowgong College principal unveiled

RAHA, June 16 - Well-known scholar, former president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha Jnanswer Sarma was the first principal of Nowgong College. He started his career as an English Professor in JB College, Jorhat where another world famous scholar KK Handique was the Principal. Later he came to Nowgong College in 1944 and retired in 1968. Honouring him, his bust was formally unveiled by his son Dr PK Sarma in the presence of a number of dignitaries on Saturday.

The unveiling of statue was followed by a function which was chaired by the college Principal Dr Sarat Borkotoky. Addressing the gathering as chief speaker, renowned historian Dr Rajen Saikia shed light on the life and works of Late Principal Jnanswer Sarma. He recalled how Sarma taught in the class room and his oratory powers.

The statue unveiled would remain an academic heritage and would be a source of inspiration for the generations to come, Dr Saikia added. He also mentioned about heritage of letters mentioned by Jnaneswar Sarma in the class room.

The statue was built by the alumni of Nowgong College (1987 to 1993). Working president of alumni association Mukul Prasad Borthakur welcomed the guests and president Lakhima Hazarika explained the significance of the function. The function began with a mangalacharan presented by Krishna Bora.

Retired Mathematics Professor CP Devi formally released a book edited by Mukul Prasad Borthakur to mark the occasion.

Dr PK Sarma, son of late Jnanswer Sarma and former president of Nagaon Zila Sahitya Sabha Upendra Borkatoky also spoke a few words. Sculptor Ashwini Sarma was also felicitated.

Meghali Devi presented two poems composed by late Jnanswer Sarma. Jamuna Hazarika offered the vote of thanks.
