GUWAHATI, Oct 11 - The foundation stone of a four-lane flyover expected to be the longest in the State, and connecting Maligaon with Kamakhya Gate and Pandu in the city was laid on Sunday by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. The proposed flyover will start from Maligaon and end by crossing the Kamakhya Temple gate on the Assam Trunk (AT) Road with an extended arm to the road leading to Pandu Ghat. The Assam PWD (Roads) will construct this flyover at an estimated cost of Rs 420.75 crore under the State Owned Priority Development (General) Scheme. The nearly 3-km-long flyover is targeted to be completed within two years from the date of construction.
Terming the rapid infrastructure development in Guwahati as part of the vision of the government to make the city the gateway to South East Asia, the Chief Minister said it was a priority to make Assam one of the best states in the country. He referred to the expansion of Guwahati city under the State Capital Region Plan and inclusion of the city by the Central government in the first round of Smart City Project as indicators of the vision of both the Central and State governments to make Guwahati and Assam the new engine of growth for the country, as envisaged by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Referring to Modis transformation through transportation motto, Sonowal said 15,000 km of roads have been built in Assam under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) during the present State governments tenure.
He requested the people of Maligaon to patiently wait for completion of the flyover as they will have to go through a little hardship during the construction period.
Speaking on the occasion, PWD Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the flyover at Maligaon would greatly reduce traffic congestion and facilitate smooth movement of vehicles and people in the busy area. He said the flyover at Ganeshguri will be completed and opened for people within a very short time and the construction of the flyover at Super Market area was also going on at a rapid pace.
He also informed about a feasibility study being carried out for a flyover connecting Gauhati Club to Bamunimaidam along with nine foot overbridges. Sarma highlighted the successful completion of the second bridge at Saraighat, Bogibeel, Dhola Sadiya, etc., as milestones of the State governments successful tenure.
