GUWAHATI, Dec 20 Taking potshots at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) over the land agreement with Bangladesh, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today alleged that they are misleading people by their comments.
Gogoi said while addressing media-persons today that with this deal Assam will gain 430 acres of land, which was in the neighbouring countrys possession.
If you go by the map, about 698.85 acres of land is in the Indian side, but the ground reality is that the land has been under the possession of Bangladesh. Through this deal, we will have 430 acres under our possession, Gogoi clarified.
The Chief Minister, however, could not explain as to what would happen to the people who are occupying the land.
The BJP and AGP have never made an effort to get back the land. Why were they mute for so long, questioned Gogoi.
Gogoi said, The deal benefits us. We will not only get land, but the fencing can be completed as well and we will be able to improve relation with the neighbouring country.
Fencing on the Assam-Bangladesh border is almost complete. Almost 97 per cent of the land fencing work is over. Of the 229 kilometres land boundary work on 220 kilometres has been completed. There is some dispute over 3 kilometres of bordering area and only 4 to 5 kilometres fencing work is left, Gogoi added.
The number of outposts along the border has been increased and floodlights are being installed. Gogoi pointed out that the land deal would improve trade relation with Bangladesh and we want friendly ties with all our neighbouring countries.
