State weightlifters feted

GUWAHATI, Dec 22: Assam Weightlifting Association (AWA) today felicitated the medal winners in the recently concluded Youth and Junior National Weightlifting Championship at New Delhi.

The felicitation meeting was held at the SAI indoor hall here where Birendra Prasad Baishya, MP and president of Weightlifting Federation of India (WFI) was present as chief guest. AWA working president Basanta Das, secretary Bhabajyoti Goswami, vice-president Ramen Das were also present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Baishya hailed the State weightlifters for their laudable show in the Youth and Junior nationals and hoped that in the near future they will be able to represent the Indian senior team. He also disclosed that next year, Assam will host this championship and hoped that the State team will win more medals.

Baishya also revealed that after taking over the presidentship of IWF it became clean and dope free. �Previously Indian weightlifting was internationally dope tainted. But the International Weightlifting Federation now terms India as the most disciplined and dope free contingent in international events�, said Baishya.

Assam won 8 gold, 5 silver and 7 bronze medals in the championship. The gold medal winners were presented Rs 10,000 each while silver and bronze medallists got Rs 5,000 and Rs 3,000 respectively.

The medal winners are � (gold) Swapnapriya Baruah (3), Jameer Hussain (2 with national record), Apurba Chetia (3). (Silver) Monalisa Sonowal (2), Pompi Saikia (1), Jameer Hussain (1), Saurav Gogoi (1). (Bronze) Janmoni Baruah (3), Pompi Saikia (2), Champak Dutta (2).

Coach Alakesh Baruah was honoured with a cash award of Rs 10,000.

Team for sr national: The AWA has named the State team for the Senior National Weightlifting Championship to be held at Modinagar, Uttar Pradesh from January 5 to 10.

The team members are: (Men) Apurba Chetia, Saurav Gogoi, Jameer Hussain, Iqbal Singh. (Women) Parbati Tamang, Dipti Saikia. Coach-Anup Konwar, manager Duljit Baruah.
