State table tennis meets get under way

GUWAHATI, Oct 24 - The 2nd Nagen Hazarika, 6th RG Baruah All Assam Major Ranking Table Tennis Tournament and 63rd Donic Sitaram Agarwala Inter District and State TT Championship began at the Desbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium in the RG Baruah Sports Complex here on Saturday.

Around 300 players from 11 affiliated units of the Assam Table Tennis Association (ATTA)-Guwahati, Nagaon, Mangaldai, Golaghat, NF Railway, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Duliajan, Nazira, OIL are taking part in the meets which will be concluded on October 31.

State Minister and ATTA president Rakibul Hussain inaugurated the championship amidst great enthusiasm. Principal of Don Bosco School, Guwahati, Fr Sebastian Mathew, OIL officer SK Rai, Director of the Assam Tribune Group Babita Rajkhowa, former TT players Madalasa Baruah, Bijoy Hazarika, Donic official Chand Verma were present as guests in the opening ceremony along with a host of former noted TT players.

Inaugurating the championship Hussain lauded the efforts of the guardians who took the pain for accompanying their wards to this championship from various places. He also urged the parents to encourage the players so that they take up the game more seriously which will help in producing quality players in the State. Hussain also praise the family members of RG Baruah and Nagen Hazarika for their supports in organising the championship. The ATTA secretary Tridib Duvarah, while welcoming the gathering said that Assam is the only State to organise State championships providing all facilities to the participants including new boards. He also thanked and urged the guardians to encourage the players for playing the game in true spirit.
