NEW DELHI, Nov 29 - The While admitting that the situation in Assam continues to raise concern, the Centre has clarified that the State Government has not moved any proposal to replace armed forces with trained local police.
Stating this in a Lok Sabha reply, Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju said that the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) has been extended by six months in Assam and a 20-km-wide belt of Meghalaya bordering the State as the law and order situation in Assam continued to be a matter of concern due to violent incidents and activities by insurgent groups.
The Centre that faces protest over continuance of the controversial Act in Assam, Nagaland and parts of Manipur, has so far not made any move to repeal the Act. A mechanism is already in place for preventing misuse of powers under the AFSPA.
