State seeks Rs 96 cr for sattras

GUWAHATI, March 16 � The State Government has submitted a proposal of Rs 96.59 crore to the Centre for preservation and development of 135 sattras. Of this, Rs 54.42 crore will cover 98 sattras for the 2009-12 financial year under ACA head.

Revealing this while answering a query from Dr Manoranjan Das (AGP) during Zero Hour today, Cultural Affairs Minister Bharat Chandra Narah said that the Sattra Sangrakshan Samittee had prepared a list of 862 sattras for financial grants, which would be covered by Central assistance in a phased manner.

The Minister said that during 2006-07, Rs 4 crore was given to 63 sattras as financial grant. �There is also a proposal to provide Rs 1 crore to 65 sattras during 2009-10. Steps have been taken to set up nine museums in Majuli for preservation of relics of sattras at a cost of Rs 2.21 crore during 2009-10. Further, an amount Rs 8 crore has been sanctioned for the financial year 2010-11,� he said.

The State Government, however, has no proposal to set up a directorate for the sattras.
