State ranking TT meet gets off

GUWAHATI, June 7 � The 9th SM All Assam Ranking Table Tennis Championship got off to a colourful start at the indoor stadium of Don Bosco School, here this morning.

The championship, sponsored by SM Group, is being organised by the Guwahati unit of Don Bosco Alumni. About 300 players, including all the top rankings from nine districts, are in fray in the meet which has been recognised by the Assam Table Tennis association (ATTA).

Competition will be conducted in 12 categories, from cadet to veterans, for both male and female. Former State player Dwarik Sarma was the chief guest in the opening ceremony while ATTA secretary Tridib Duvarah was the guest of honour.

Father Joseph Thalekkatt, Principal of the school thanked the ATTA for allotting the meet to Don Bosco while welcoming the gathering. He also dwelt on the success stories of table tennis in Assam and the stalwarts of the game that Don Bosco School have produced over the years.

Sarma also hailed the organisers and the ATTA for organising the championship in a befitting manner.

He also urged the youngsters to take the advantage of ideal playing conditions which has been offered by the organisers.

Duvarah thanked Don Bosco School for providing the existing facilities of the school for holding the major TT event of the State and stressed on the importance of discipline in sports. He also thanked SM Group for providing financial support to the meet.

The three-day tournament will conclude on Thursday.
