State proposal on rivers returned

NEW DELHI, March 13 � Assam Government�s Rs 297 crore proposal to clean up Bharalu and Kalong rivers has been returned by National River Conservation Directorate (NRCD).

The State Government had submitted projects proposals for pollution abatement of Bharalu and Kalong rivers at an estimated cost of Rs 223 crore and Rs 74.86 crore, respectively to the NRCD. The proposals were examined and returned to the Government of Assam with comments and observations, Minister of State for Environment and Forest Jayanthi Natarajan said in a Rajya Sabha reply to a question by Naznin Faruque.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) based on their monitoring, have identified Bharalu, Kalong, Deepor Beel and Buridihing as polluted river stretches and water bodies.
