GUWAHATI, April 10: The overall power situation in the State deteriorated today due to the 275-MW Kopili Hydroelectric Power Station of the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) going under total shutdown. The State receives 50 per cent of the power generated by this power station.

Moreover, the State is facing short supply of around 60 MW of power from the Eastern Grid of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) for the past two days. Against the 130 MW of power it receives from this grid, it has been receiving around 70 MW of power from it for the past two days, sources in the government-run Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd (APDCL) said.

However, the situation started improving in the afternoon hours following the procurement of an additional amount of 180 MW of power from the power exchange. The situation is expected to improve further following the Kopili Power Station coming into the grid late this evening, sources said.

The shortfall in power supply experienced by the State during the off- peak-load-hour (daytime) today was around 200 MW. The peak-load-hour (evening) shortfall in power supply faced by the State today was around 250 MW. The State faces a shortfall of around 150 MW in power supply under normal condition, sources said. It needs mention here that under normal situation, the State uses to purchase around 120 MW of power on a round-the-clock basis from the power exchange.
