State pays tribute to Bhupen Hazarika

GUWAHATI, Nov 5 - The State today fondly remembered legendary music maestro Dr Bhupen Hazarika on the occasion of his ninth death anniversary with tribute programmes organised across Assam. The �bard of the Brahmaputra� had left for his heavenly abode on November 5, 2011. While paying tribute to the cultural icon at the Sudhakantha�s Samadhikshetra in Jalukbari, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika�s contributions act as a bridge in taking the Assamese community to the global platform.

At the tribute programme organised by the State Directorate of Cultural Affairs, on the premises of the Samadhikshetra, the Chief Minister said Dr Hazarika�s songs carried deeper meanings of life and brotherhood, encouraging the society to preserve and promote these values. Sonowal called upon the youth to study the life and works of the doyen, stressing that a deep understanding of Dr Hazarika�s creations would broaden their outlook and boost humanitarian values among them.

Minister Naba Kumar Doley, MP Queen Oja and Chief Minister�s media adviser Hrishikesh Goswami also spoke on the occasion. Director of Cultural Affairs Bishnu Kamal Bora delivered the welcome address of the event.

The All India Congress Committee general secretary in-charge of Assam Jitendra Singh, State Congress president Ripun Bora and MP Gaurav Gogoi also visited Dr Hazarika�s Samadhikshetra this morning to offer floral tribute.

Remembering Dr Hazarika�s contributions in enriching the Assamese music and culture, a programme was organised at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra where Kalakshetra secretary Sudarshan Thakur and members paid their tribute to the Sudhakantha.

The All Assam Students� Union (AASU) units across Assam organised tribute programmes for paying homage to the legend. AASU leaders paid floral tribute at the statue of the Dr Hazarika at Dighalipukhuripar here. AASU chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya, president Dipanka Kumar Nath and general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi led the tribute programme.

In the evening, 1,000 earthen lamps were lit on the bank of Dighalipukhuri.

The AASU leaders also visited the icon�s Samadhikshetra to offer their tribute.
