Cop killed in mishap

JAGIROAD, Aug 13 - A police official died and another person was seriously injured in a road accident on Wednesday at Kumarbori near Nellie when a Guwahati-bound car (AS-01-AY-6312) hit the divider on NH-37. The deceased has been identified as Boko Police Station in-charge Ratneswar Das. The injured man, Phanindra Kalita, has been shifted to GMCH, sources said. � Correspondent

RTPCR tests at SMCH

SILCHAR, Aug 13 - The Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) has conducted more than 70,000 Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RTPCR) tests. SMCH vice principal Dr Bhaskar Gupta said �we have tested 70,559 samples of RTPCR tests, and 2,828 cases have turned out COVID-19 positive. One patient Himangshu Dey from Amraghat, aged 70 years, was in critical condition and succumbed to the disease on August 11. There are 12 patients undergoing treatment in the ICU while three have been kept under ventilator support.� A septuagenarian patient Pawan Agarwal, who underwent heart transplant, turned out to be both Rapid Antigen Test and RTPCR negative. He had come to the hospital with breathing difficulties and had tested positive under the RAT. He was given plasma therapy and Remdesivir and responded to the treatment. � Staff Correspondent

Constable held

DHUBRI, Aug 13 - Dhubri police on Wednesday evening arrested a constable, posted at College TOP, for allegedly leaking information about operations and negotiating with persons accused in different cases. Dhubri SP Anand Mishra said many operations under College TOP were constantly failing, and they have proof that constable Golzar Hussain was leaking information about police operations. �We have call records of the constable with the accused persons where he was giving crucial information about operations and was negotiating with them. � Correspondent

ABSU help for ailing scribe

KALAIGAON, Aug 13 - ABSU president Dipen Boro and other ABSU leaders visited the house of ailing journalist Dhaneswar Rabha�s who has been suffering from kidney problems since January. Rabha is a journalist of news channel Asomiya Pratidin and Assamese newspaper Khabar. GMCH doctors advised kidney transplantation, but Rabha could not afford the expensive procedure. A resident of Kacharitol village near Tangla town, Rabha has been undergoing dialysis thrice a week with public support. Dipen Boro met him and said that ABSU would extend all support for his treatment. � Correspondent

New COVID test centres

GOALPARA, Aug 13 - The Health department has opened three COVID-19 testing and collection centres in Goalpara under Balijana revenue circle at ASTC point, Bapujinagar and DN Singha Stadium. Joint director in the Health & Family Welfare department Dr Abhijit Basu said a mass drive was initiated in association with the district administration to increase the number of Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT). The district has conducted RATs on around 8,000 persons against the target of 2,000 on Wednesday. Around 60 new cases were identified during the sample tests. Balijana circle officer Pritom Das said all GP members including GP presidents and secretaries are helping the people in the rural areas. � Correspondent

AASU memo on toll plaza

BAIHATA CHARIALI, Aug 13 - The All Assam Students� Union (AASU), Pub Kamrup unit has demanded immediate closure of the toll plaza at Madanpur. The students� body submitted a memorandum to Kamrup Deputy Commissioner alleging that the toll plaza has affected the academic atmosphere of the Madanpur Vidyapith High School which is located just 100 metres from the school. � ANN Service
