State Museum celebrates 78th Foundation Day

GUWAHATI, April 21 - The 78th Foundation Day of the Assam State Museum was celebrated today at the Kanaklal Barua Auditorium, Assam State Museum here.

Professor Sarit K Chaudhuri, Director of Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya, Bhopal attended the function as a key resource person. In his lecture, he dwelt on the topic �Experiencing new Museum Movement in India: Issues and Concerns�, and said that museums can become institutions of learning and can play a significant role in revitalising the lost heritage which can have huge value of importance to the people.

VB Pyarelal, Addl Chief Secretary, Cultural Affairs Department, who presided over the function, stressed that museums should not be confined for objects of the past and corroborated the idea of linkages with other institutions.

YS Wunglengton, Director of Museums, Assam while delivering the welcome speech, highlighted the key works of the department since inception. Later in the programme, two masterpiece paintings, �The Portrait of Dinanath Bezbarua� and �Yatra � The Journey� and one calligraphy were unveiled. The State Museum bulletin was also released.
