State-level one-act play contest organised at Jorhat

JORHAT, March 11 - The Jorhat district unit along with North East regional samity of Prakton Ulfa Oikya Mancha representing former ULFA cadres, with support from Kalyani Theatre and Kalyani Samaj Kalyan Kendra is organising a three-day State-level one-act play competition at Kalyani Ranga Mancha on the outskirts of the city from March 16.

Addressing mediapersons here on Saturday, the president of the Jorhat district unit of the Mancha, Bhaskar Bordoloi said that the competition having a total prize money of Rs 81,000 has been organised in memory of those people who had sacrificed their lives for the betterment of Assam.

Bordoloi said that the aim of organising the three-day event was to promote the tradition of staging one-act plays and to engage the youths in creative ventures.

Trilok Bora, president of the organising committee, who is Principal of Mahatma Gandhi College here, said 18 teams have confirmed their participation so far and more were expected.

Bora said the plays will be staged from 5 pm onwards with a 45-minutes time limit for each presentation. Outstation teams will be provided accommodation and food along with an amount to bear travel expenses. The wining team will be given Rs 30,000, besides a trophy and a citation followed by Rs 20,000 to the runners-up and Rs 10,000 to the second runners-up.

There will be cash prizes in another 11 categories, which includes best actor and actress and best disciplined team, Bora said.

He said during the day time on the three days, various activities like lectures and discussions on different cultural topics, including an open session will be held. ULFA leader Anup Chetia, who is now convenor of Khilanjiya Mancha, Assam, is scheduled to address the gathering on March 18.
