State-level debate contest concludes

GUWAHATI, Aug 28 - The 20th All Assam Sarat Chandra Goswami Memorial Inter-College Debate Competition organised by Handique Girls� College was successfully held on August 25 at the Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture here, a press release stated.

The competition was held in a distinctive manner where 28 debaters from all across Assam debated in preliminary round, which was followed by the grand finale where the selected 12 competed amongst themselves.

The inaugural session was conducted by Dr Srutimala Duara and started withlighting of the ceremonial lamp and floral tributes to Sarat Chandra Goswami, followed by welcome address by Principal of the college Dr Utpal Dutta.

A meeting held on the occasion was presided over by Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta of Gauhati University. Nilay Dutta, senior advocate and Advocate General of Arunachal Pradesh attended as chief guest and Speaker of the debate competition.

The competition saw fierce debate on the topics, �Privatisation of Heritage Sites is Necessary for Development of Tourism Sector in India� and �India Today Needs its own Model of Nationalism�.

While Cotton University was adjudged as the best team, National Law University and Judicial Academy clinched runners up trophies. At the individual level, Anansha Borthakur got the Best Debater Award.
