State leaders mourn demise

GUWAHATI, Nov 23 - Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia along with leaders of different political parties and personalities mourned the death of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

Terming the demise of Tarun Gogoi as an irreparable loss to the State as well as to the nation, Prof. Mukhi said, �I am deeply hurt by the death of the veteran politician who served the State as Chief Minister for three consecutive terms with deep commitment.�

�He was a towering leader who witnessed several ups and downs during his long political career. His sagacity and leadership as the former Union Minister and Chief Minister will be a source of inspiration and guidance for many,� the Governor added.

In his condolence message, Chief Minister Sonowal said, �With his death, the State has lost an experienced, capable and efficient political leader. The people of Assam will always remember his committed service and contributions to the State. His sense of humour, amiable and outspoken nature attracted everyone. He set high ethical values in the field of politics with his simple lifestyle and contributed profusely in strengthening democratic values in the country�.

Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia stated that Tarun Gogoi was a veritable Bhishma Pitamaha for the Congress workers of Assam.

Industries and Commerce Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary condoled Gogoi�s demise and stated that he was a leader of the masses. Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Naba Kumar Doley also condoled Gogoi�s death.

Former Chief Minister Bhumidhar Barman, who was a long-time colleague of Gogoi in the Congress party, was inconsolable. Barman was weeping when he arrived at the GMCH after Gogoi�s demise.

�Gogoi was not only a very close friend of mine, but he was also a friend with everyone in our party. He was a great administrator. He was a great leader and a great human being. I had a long association with him. I served as Minister in all the three governments headed by Gogoi. His demise is a big loss for the State as well as for the Congress party,� said Barman.

President of Assam State BJP Ranjeet Kumar Dass while condoling the demise of Tarun Gogoi stated that people of Assam will always feel the absence of Gogoi.

The Communist Party of India, Assam State Council also condoled the death of Gogoi and said that the former Chief Minsiter�s demise is an irreparable loss for the State.

The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) also mourned the death of the former Chief Minister. In a statement, AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal said that today the nation lost a dynamic politician.

Bodoland People�s Front president Hagrama Mohilary condoled Gogoi�s demise. Mohilary, along with State Minister and BPF leader Chandan Brahma, visited the GMCH this evening to pay respects to Gogoi.

President of Asom Gana Parishad and Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and other senior members of the party mourned the death of Gogoi.

Assam State Coordinator of Aam Aadmi Party Dr. Bhaben Choudhury, chief convenors of Asom Jatiyo Parishad Dr. Krishna Gopal Bhattacharya and Basanta Deka and the leadership of Raijor Dal also mourned the death of the former Chief Minister.
