State keen to have Bangla consulate

GUWAHATI, Sept 18 � Assam Government is keen to have a consulate or trade office of Bangladesh here to further relations between the north eastern states and Dhaka, reports PTI.

An official statement issued today said the issue was raised during a meeting between Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pankaj Saran and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi during the day.

The Chief Minister asked Saran to take up the matter with concerned officials in Dhaka.

Issues related to trade, transportation and communication between the North Eastern states and Bangladesh were also discussed at the meeting, the statement said.

During the meeting, Gogoi briefed the Indian High Commissioner about problems related to detection and deportation of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants residing in Assam and asked him to take up the issue with the neighbouring country�s government at the diplomatic level.

Gogoi, the statement said, also stressed on use of water transport for increasing commerce between the two nations.

On his part, Saran assured Gogoi that he would take up all the matters raised by him with the Bangladesh government.
