State HS exam results out

By Staff reporter/correspondents

GUWAHATI, June 4 The AHSEC Higher Secondary Final Examination results in Science, Commerce, and Arts, declared today, revealed a few interesting facts about the educational scene in Assam. The overall pass percentage in Arts and Science dipped slightly lower than in 2011, and the coveted top ranks were attained by students from different parts of the State.

A number of candidates who appeared in the examination from institutions in Barak Valley, Dibrugarh and Pathsala were among those who performed exceedingly well.

Despite long held concerns, the pass percentage in some districts such as Chirang, Dima Hasao, and Karbi Anglong continued to be low in comparison with some other districts of the state. Efforts to improve the educational standards in these districts appear to have been unsuccessful if the results are taken as indicators.

In the Arts stream, a total of 1,80,659 candidates took the test and 1,26,875 were successful. The break-up showed 14,308 placed in the first division, 41,729 in the second division, and 70,838 in the third division. The pass percentage was 70.23 per cent - a decrease from last years, which was 73.14 per cent.

Minakshi Kakati, a candidate from Krishna Kanta Handique Junior College Pathsala and Anindita Chakravarty of Salt Brook Academy, Dibrugarh were ranked first in the merit list. Each scored 458 out of a total of 500.

Speaking to The Assam Tribune over phone, Minakshi attributed her success to the guidance and support of her parents as well as her teachers. She now plans to study Economics Major at Cotton College, after which she will opt for a career in academics.

As in the Arts stream, the pass percentage in the Science stream was slightly less than last year. This year the pass percentage was 85.58, which was 87.32 per cent in 2011.

A total of 18,442 candidates appeared for the examination of whom 10,350 passed in the first division, 4,979 in the second division, and 453 in the third division.

Sankhya Chakravarty brought laurels to Ramanuj Gupta Junior College, Silchar by attaining the first rank in the Science stream with aggregate marks of 482. Among the top 10 positions four positions were occupied by students who took the test from Silchar. Students from institutions in Dibrugarh and Pathsala also did well in this years examination.

In marked contrast was the absence of toppers from Guwahati. Surajit Kalita of Cotton College, ranked fourth, was the only candidate who could make it to the coveted Science stream merit list.

Results in the Commerce stream revealed an improvement over last year. The pass percentage reached an all time high of 81.17 which last year was 79.81 per cent. A total of 15,068 candidates appeared in the test of whom 3,375 passed in first division, 4,906 in the second division and 3,949 were placed in the third division.

In a marked show of excellence seven students from Gauhati Commerce College secured positions in the top-ten merit list. Jugal Kishore Rathi who appeared from Ramanuj Gupta Jr College, Silchar achieved the top rank with aggregate marks of 446.

Conspicuously missing from the toppers list were candidates from some eminent colleges of Guwahati. Even with much better infrastructure and faculty strength than their counterparts in most other areas, these institutions appear to have faltered in producing rank holders. For instance, Cotton College had only one topper in the Science stream merit list. Other well-known institutions also failed to see their students in the top order.

Vocational: The results of HS Final Year Examination of Vocational Part II declared today showed a pass percentage of 77.59, a drop from 80.17 per cent registered in 2011. In all, 921 candidates were successful of 1187 who had appeared for the exam.
