GUWAHATI, Aug 16 - Even though actress and global icon Priyanka Chopra is no longer the brand ambassador of Assam Tourism, the State government has bought the media rights of using the content shot with her for another year.

Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) Chairperson Jayanta Malla Baruah today said that although the contract had expired in 2018, the State has the right of using the content of the ad films or other publicity content, which is being used to promote Assam Tourism.

As a global icon, Priyanka Chopra took the Assam Tourism promotion to a certain level. Even now, we have the media right for one year which is furthering the cause. However, it is yet to be decided whether Assam needs another brand ambassador at all, he mentioned.

Speculations were rife about actor Akshay Kumars name as the tourism brand ambassador as his humane gesture of contributing Rs 2 crore for the flood-affected people of Assam won hearts here.

The ATDC Chairman however said that no decision has been made about roping in another celebrity to promote Assam Tourism.

It needs mention that there has been a steady growth in the number of tourists in the State. During 2018-19, Assam received 60, 27,002 domestic and 41,209 foreign tourists. In the year previous to that the number of domestic tourists was 59,34,791, while 31,739 foreign tourists visited Assam.

A few booking cancellations were noticed during the Citizenship Amendment Bill-related movement. However, it soon normalised and tourism was not affected due to CAB, he mentioned.
